webMethods launches two solution suites for EDI-based operations
FAIRFAX, Virginia (August 20, 2002) - webMethods, a provider of integration software, has launched two new solution suites designed to enable global organizations to upgrade and expand current EDI-based operations by leveraging the webMethods integration platform to gain end-to-end, enterprise integration for automated business processes.

webMethods' solution suites are designed to give companies support for traditional EDI processes as well as the means to achieve collaborative commerce by leveraging its proven integration platform for end-to-end business process automation.

"Increasingly, enterprises are seeking to reduce manual processes, reduce latency in their overall business processes and reduce errors caused by manual data entry," said Frank Kenney, Knowledge Specialist, Application Integration, Gartner in a published report by Gartner entitled EDI Translators: New Offerings Present New Opportunities, F. Kenney, B. Lheureux, May 2002. "To achieve these mission-critical goals, documents that have been translated must be exchanged directly with other enterprise systems or with an application integration infrastructure."

webMethods said it aims to enable companies to leverage the extended enterprise by integrating traditional EDI processes with their back-office applications for real-time collaboration with customers and partners. According to webMethods, its collaborative EDI solutions are designed to eliminate the need for traditional batch processing by enabling real-time business transactions with ERP applications.

"Spartan Stores is leveraging the webMethods integration platform's EDIINT capabilities to transition away from traditional EDI processes that have higher maintenance costs and restrictions," said Dave Couch, Vice President of Information Technology, Spartan Stores. "By using the Internet to process EDI transactions, Spartan Stores will achieve the flexible and real-time exchange of business documents with our partners and suppliers - something we could not do previously on our traditional EDI platform."

webMethods said it aims to provide collaborative EDI solutions in two solution suites to meet the range of EDI requirements for today’s Global 2000 companies. The solution suites are designed to give flexibility to EDI-driven industries such as, automotive, consumer packaged goods and high-tech manufacturing.

To help companies make the migration from traditional EDI to collaborative EDI, webMethods said its integration platform has been bundled with fixed-price professional services that allow companies to: gain real-time integration with back-end systems for collaborative EDI; replace tightly coupled EDI architecture with a plug and play architecture to speed development; enable partners to make rapid and inexpensive connections to critical EDI processes; transition business strategy from EDI to XML-based industry standards such as CIDX, ebXML, and RosettaNet; leverage a Web service-based architecture for accelerated deployment across the enterprise; and meet the requirements of the heaviest EDI volumes with support for additional capacity.

In addition, the webMethods integration platform combined with workflow is designed to: reduce latency and error by incorporating human intervention to automated processes; provide advanced support for rip and read processes to truly automate EDI operations; accelerate integration with email and Web-based systems for approvals, manual processing, reporting and special handling; improve processing rates of transactions, and Web-enable EDI processes to give trading partners visibility into processed EDI transactions.

"The rapid change in today's EDI landscape has afforded an important opportunity for companies to embrace the next-generation in EDI," said Scott Crompton, Vice President and General Manger, Manufacturing Business Unit, webMethods. "webMethods' collaborative EDI solution suites are designed to help these companies take the next step in business process automation by integrating back-end business applications in conjunction with their existing EDI processes."

To the Editor,
As you rightly point out in your Oct 25 editorial entitled "Win/Win, Lose/Lose," the marketing spin and posturing of public marketplaces and consortia in the chemical industry are being tested by end users that want to maintain their competitive edge and receive a fast ROI.
To the Editor,
My views might not be considered neutral, with OxyChem's equity participation in Envera, but "Hub-to-Hub" connectivity was always in Envera's plans. As a founding Envera member and as an early adopter of B2B connectivity utilizing XML (in production since November 1999) OxyChem strongly endorses the need for "Hub-to-Hub" connectivity, both inter- and intra-Industry. Consider the real flywheel effects of connecting two hubs within the Chemical sector. In addition here are four thoughts on why this would be a positive step:
