Ticona web site to add product management and design collaboration services
SUMMIT, New Jersey (June 4, 2001) -- Ticona, the technical polymers business of Celanese AG, plans to add product management and design collaboration services to its website through an alliance with Conferos Inc.
The alliance will allow Ticona (www.ticona.com) to offer access to Conferos' product development management services, design collaboration software and storage capabilities through Ticona's web site. Ticona customers will be able to view and work on designs simultaneously, have remote access to create and share critical files, and work with additional parties to bring their programs to reality.

"Customers now have the opportunity to engage in real-time product design consultations with all the principals that comprise the plastics industry design chain simply by leveraging the low-cost, global research of the Internet," said Edward Munoz, Ticona CEO. "We believe there is a substantial competitive advantage for anyone who can make collaborative new product development a priority by integrating the global design chain."

The $400 billion U.S. plastics industry comprises OEMs, processors and materials suppliers such as Ticona. Each must collaborate in the design process to deliver plastic products to market. However, the industry is highly fragmented, consisting of thousands of potential trading partners.

"Because Conferos is web-based, Ticona and others in the design chain can have direct and timely access to all critical elements of the design process, without the requirement of all being face-to-face or even all being online at the same time," said Kevin Cronin, Ticona Global eBusiness Director. "The opportunity to significantly reduce travel and logistics costs alone makes it extremely attractive."

Cronin said Ticona plans to make access to the Conferos tools available through the Ticona web site, first to customers in the U.S. and then to customers in Europe.

Cronin cited Conferos' management as a key factor in Ticona's decision. "We believe the combined talent and industry knowledge of the management team, along with the partnerships they have established, particularly with IBM and PTC, provide a unique competitive advantage to their offering," he said.
