Solvay expands capacity for caprolactone polymers
SOLVAY Caprolactones has started a multi-stage expansion at its Warrington, UK site which will more than double its capacity for caprolactone polymers over the next three years. The expansion builds on SOLVAY’s 1998 expansion in caprolactone monomer and polymers, and will meet the rapid growth in customer demand for caprolactone products in footwear, orthopedics, automotive, aerospace, and other industries.
The outstanding properties of caprolactone polymers – including their biodegradability – could also bring about the development of novel, high-yield niche applications. In the framework of its policy to expand its activities in specialty products, SOLVAY will boost the capacity of high molecular weight CAPA® polycaprolactones, which are thermoplastics with attractive properties for shoe manufacture, orthopedic splints, and other applications. The first step in this expansion will be complete in 2002. Further expansions through 2004 will double Warrington’s thermoplastics capacity. Also scheduled for 2002 is a doubling of SOLVAY’s capacity for low molecular weight polyols (polymers and copolymers), used in high performance polyurethanes for paints, adhesives, cast elastomers and thermoplastics. “We believe that the strong growth of caprolactone polymers will continue,” said Vance Erickson, Managing Director of SOLVAY Caprolactones, “and SOLVAY intends to maintain a leadership position in these products.” SOLVAY is an international pharmaceutical and chemical group headquartered in Brussels, Belgium. It employs about 32,000 people in 50 countries. In 2000 its consolidated sales amounted to ˆ8.9 billion generated by its four activity sectors: Chemicals, Plastics, Processing and Pharmaceuticals.
