SPI Dynamics releases enterprise-wide web application security assessment product, WebInspect 3.0
ATLANTA (March 10, 2003) - SPI Dynamics, provider of web application security assessment solutions, has released WebInspect 3.0, a web application assessment product specifically designed to address the needs of four groups within the organization, namely application developers, quality assurance professionals, security auditors and security operations professionals.
WebInspect 3.0 is apparently the first and only web application assessment product to enable customers to automate the assessment of their web services security.

Last year, many organizations discovered that existing IT security strategies were ineffective in preventing web application security vulnerabilities. To quantify the risk, security and operations personnel began using web application security assessment tools. Through this process, they discovered that many of the vulnerabilities could not be corrected by operations personnel, as they resulted from insecure application development practices.

WebInspect 3.0 Enterprise Edition specifically addresses this requirement, with unique features and benefits designed for pre-production personnel including application developers and quality assurance practitioners. By using WebInspect early and often throughout the development lifecycle, organizations can significantly reduce the initial costs and long- term risks associated with their web applications.

"The appropriate time to address security for applications is during the development phase, when there is still an opportunity to effect change without impacting users," said Eric Hemmendinger, Research Director for Security and Privacy at Aberdeen Group. "But even those organizations that do perform assessments of applications during the development stage cannot view the applications as invulnerable on a long-term basis, since new exploits are developed all the time. Products like WebInspect help enterprises in the application development phase, but also throughout the application lifecycle, providing the opportunity for IT administrators to ensure that newly developed hacks do not cripple or exploit existing applications."

WebInspect 3.0 continues to provide customers with an accurate, extensible and easy-to-use product. With a host of new features and unparalleled speed, WebInspect 3.0 fully addresses the needs of the enterprise. WebInspect adapts to any enterprise environment. Through unique Adaptive-Agent technology, WebInspect 3.0 enables customers to perform security assessments on any web-enabled application, including specific assessment capabilities for Microsoft .NET, IBM WebSphere, Lotus Domino, Oracle Application Servers and MacroMedia ColdFusion. WebInspect 3.0's new RCA Security Technology(TM) enables enterprise customers to assess web applications as never before, going deeper into the application and delivering the most comprehensive and accurate web application assessment possible.

WebInspect 3.0 is the first and only assessment product to provide fully automated web services security assessments. With WebInspect 3.0, enterprises with web services implementations can automatically assess a web service by discovering all XML input parameters and performing parameter manipulation on each XML field looking for vulnerabilities within the service itself.

"Microsoft and IBM are both incorporating web services as part of their overall strategy,” commented Caleb Sima, Co-founder and CTO of SPI Dynamics. “Microsoft supports web services as part of the .NET framework and IBM's WebSphere development environment and application servers also support web services deployment. As applications are rolled out in the future, they will have a higher percentage of web services components associated with them. Prior to those applications being put into production, the web services, as well as the web applications, will need to be tested for security to make sure that vulnerabilities don't exist that could compromise an organization. Web services security must go beyond authentication and encryption to include all the application processing capabilities of the web service. It is very important to have an automated tool that can do web application and web services security assessments."
