Rodel Partners With Clariant to Provide Slurry for Direct STI CMP Applications
PHOENIX--April 23, 2001--Rodel, Inc., an innovator of integrated materials for the microelectronics industry, has announced a partnership with Clariant Corporation to distribute and market the company's new colloidal silica-based slurry. Developed by Clariant, Elexsol(R) STS-2 will be used in CMP (chemical mechanical polishing) applications, including direct STI (shallow trench isolation). Elexsol STS-2 will begin shipping at the end of second quarter 2001.

"Rodel has been the exclusive worldwide market channel for Clariant's CMP slurry offerings since 1997. We are pleased to expand our product portfolio to now include an advanced STI CMP solution. This partnership demonstrates our ongoing commitment to meeting both our customers' and the industry's demands for the most advanced CMP technology," said Mario Stanghellini, Rodel's vice president and general manager, CMP.

With traditional ceria-based slurries, defectivity issues and product variations are common problems resulting from the difficulty in dispersing the slurry. As device linewidths continue to shrink, defectivity is an increasingly critical concern. Elexsol STS-2 is a high selectivity, low-defectivity slurry that provides superior surface finish and stability with virtually no product variability. Demonstrating an excellent selectivity on both pattern wafers and sheet films, the proprietary colloidal silica formulation allows direct STI CMP polishing and increased performance criteria in an easy-to-use single component slurry.

"Establishing strategic alliances with technology leaders like Rodel enables Clariant to strengthen its presence within new markets. We believe that the Elexsol STS-2 will gain a considerable market presence as a result of this partnership and we look forward to maintaining a strong and ongoing relationship with Rodel," commented Bruno Gastinne, Clariant's global marketing manager for CMP colloidal silica.

Rodel representatives will be available to discuss the Elexsol STS-2 slurry during the Semicon Europa 2001 tradeshow, being held April 24 - 26, 2001 at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre in Munich, Germany. Customers and press are invited to visit the Rodel booth, number B1.364, at any time during the show.
