Most-admired companies grow annual returns 20%+
DURHAM, North Carolina (January 30, 2003) -- Companies that manage their reputations well cement their good standings among employees, customers, shareholders and the general public, according to a report by business intelligence firm Cutting Edge Information. Furthermore, companies that build strong reputations can more easily weather potential corporate crises when they arise.
"Crisis Management and Corporate Reputation" shows how companies including General Electric, Coca-Cola, Johnson & Johnson, IBM, FedEx, Southwest Airlines and American Express capitalize on their products' emotional connection and brand reputation. The report also explains the multi-tiered process that must be integrated within a company to build a top corporate reputation.

"Customer, shareholder and employee cynicism is exploding right now and businesses face a very real crisis of confidence," said Cutting Edge Information CEO Jason Richardson. "Companies that focus on their reputations will weather this storm and see tremendous long-term benefits in market share, investor support and employee morale."

For example, Cutting Edge Information's research shows that the most reputable companies directly tie financial gains to their corporate image. In fact, between 1983 and 1997, Fortune's most admired companies increased annual returns, on average, by 22 percent. By contrast, the Standard and Poor's 500 posted 16 percent returns, and those companies with the lowest rankings faced negative returns of 1.7 percent.

The report also found that most reputable corporations donate a minimum of 1% of average, domestic, pre-tax profits to the charitable, non-profit organizations of their choice as part of their reputation management strategies.

The report shows reputation-conscious organizations how to: Build a strong corporate identity and reputation; execute your corporate reputation plan with discipline; incorporate reputation management into all aspects of your business; manage corporate crises to minimize long-term damage and protect reputations; and use proven techniques to align your reputation management with your strategy.
