Dow to market caustic soda on ChemConnect
MIDLAND, Michigan (November 20, 2002) -– The Dow Chemical Company has announced plans to market caustic soda through an additional sales channel, ChemConnect (www.chemconnect.com), an electronic marketplace for buyers and sellers of chemicals and plastics worldwide, starting in December.
The company also will continue to market caustic soda through its existing direct and third-party sales channels.

Dow has committed to regularly feature from two to five postings, with multi-ship points, on the trading site. Potential regional postings for Dow’s initial offering may include f.o.b. production points on the Gulf Coast, as well as postings from Dow’s regional terminals. Product will be delivered via rail car, barge and tank truck.

Dow telesales representatives will handle calls resulting from the postings on ChemConnect, and customers will be able to place and track orders through MyAccount@Dow, a private, customer-specific extranet for transactions and information exchange.

“Our primary objective for marketing caustic soda through ChemConnect is to provide an additional sales channel for our customers,” says Rob Broomham, Global Marketing Director for caustic soda at Dow. “Our developing partnership with ChemConnect offers our customers 24-hours-a-day service and a secure online business environment, and further enhances and expands Dow’s superior distribution network.”

Broomham said that Dow is the first caustic producer to make a major commitment to ChemConnect by marketing caustic soda through the site on a regular basis. ChemConnect CEO John Robinson said the commitment from Dow "further enhances ChemConnect's position as a strategic channel for the procurement and sale of chemicals and plastics. By building out this capability via ChemConnect, Dow is contributing to our growing liquidity which, in concert with our continued build-out of value-added services, solidifies our position as the industry's only end-to-end e-commerce solution."

While Broomham said ChemConnect provides an excellent new purchasing channel for caustic soda end users, he pointed to Dow’s Web site – www.dowcaustic.com – as an excellent source of information about Dow’s caustic soda business. The Web site offers round-the-clock information about: products and applications; sales specifications; technical support materials; safety and handling guidelines, including Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS); and Dow’s worldwide production and distribution centers.

“Our caustic soda Web site offers our customers and prospective customers a wealth of valuable resources,” Broomham says. “Plus, we’re planning to redesign and upgrade the site to offer additional technical information on-line. We invite customers to continue to visit our site to obtain helpful information and to check it in the future for new information.”

Dow is a science and technology company that provides chemical, plastic and agricultural products and services to many essential consumer markets.

ChemConnect helps customers optimize their purchasing and sales processes for chemicals, plastics, and related products through a combination of market information, industry expertise, e-commerce solutions, and an active network of trading partners. The company says that more than 7,500 member companies in multiple industries around the world use ChemConnect's highly efficient tools and services to streamline transactions and lower costs.
