Celanese Chemicals to Shut Down Its Vinyl Acetate Unit in Edmonton. Cangrejera VAM Unit to Remain Operational
DALLAS, Nov. 2 -- As part of the company's ongoing performance and process improvement efforts, Celanese Chemicals, the chemicals business of Celanese AG, has announced it will shut down its 85,000 ton capacity VAM unit in Edmonton, Canada by the first quarter of 2002.
On August 31, 2001, Celanese AG announced a global restructuring effort -- the Forward Initiative - aimed at increasing the company's overall competitiveness. As part of this effort, Celanese began a thorough feasibility study of operating VAM units at both its Edmonton and Cangrejera, Mexico sites. As a result of the company's new VAntage(TM) technology, Celanese expects to significantly improve VAM production efficiencies and can then bring additional capacity to the market as demand requires. These innovations and the company's recent acetic acid expansions at its Clear Lake, Texas facility and startup in Singapore have enabled Celanese to focus on those units offering clear economic advantages. ``Having reviewed the cost and marketing position of our two facilities, we confirmed that the Cangrejera plant has a significant market advantage in supplying local customers and a logistical advantage in securing raw materials,'' said John O'Dwyer, vice president and general manager of acetyls, Celanese Chemicals. ``While we will no longer produce in West Canada, we have taken steps to assure that our customers in the region continue to receive competitively priced VAM through a simplified logistics process,'' he said. Based in Dallas, Texas, Celanese Chemicals consists of the Acetyls and Chemical Intermediates segments of Celanese AG.
