Avery Dennison Elects Bruce Karatz New Director
PASADENA, Calif.--Oct. 30, 2001--Avery Dennison Corporation today announced that its board of directors has elected Bruce Karatz as a director of the Company, effective as of November 1, 2001.
Karatz, 56, is chairman, president and chief executive officer of KB Home. Based in Los Angeles, KB Home is one of America's largest homebuilders. In addition, a majority-owned subsidiary of KB Home is one of the largest homebuilders in France and the company operates a full-service mortgage company. Formerly known as Kaufman and Broad Home Corporation, KB Home is a Fortune 500 company. "Bruce Karatz is an excellent addition to our board of directors," said Philip M. Neal, chairman and chief executive officer of Avery Dennison. "He is an outstanding executive who brings a wealth of marketing expertise, business innovation and international management experience to our board. Bruce's strategic vision and leadership have resulted in impressive growth at KB Home, and we look forward to his valuable insight as a member the board of directors at Avery Dennison." Karatz joined the corporate staff of KB Home in 1972 and was promoted to the position of president of its homebuilding business in France in 1976. In 1980, he returned to the United States to serve as president of all housing operations for the company, and was appointed chief executive officer in 1985. Karatz was named chairman of KB Home in 1993. He currently serves on the board of directors of Honeywell, The Kroger Company and National Golf Properties, Inc. Karatz has received numerous awards and honors, including the Legend Award in 2001 from the Home Builders Association of Northern California and Builder of the Year Award in 2000 from the Building Association of Southern California. Also in 2000, Karatz received the Distinguished Humanitarian Award from the B'nai B'rith Association. He was named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the president of the French Republic in 1999. In 1996, Karatz received the Spirit of Life Award from City of Hope National Medical Center and the Jack Webb Award from the Los Angeles Police Historical Society. He is active in a variety of leadership positions at nonprofit organizations, including serving as chairman of the Los Angeles World Affairs Council, California Business Roundtable and RAND Education. Karatz is a trustee of RAND in Santa Monica and Pitzer College in Claremont, Calif. He is governor of the Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County. Karatz is a member of the Board of Councilors at the University of Southern California Law Center, Los Angeles Business Advisors and the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington, D.C. Karatz earned a J.D. degree in 1970 from the University of Southern California and a B.A. degree in 1967 from Boston University. Avery Dennison also announced that its board of directors has amended the bylaws of the Company to increase the size of the board from 12 to 13 members. Karatz will become the thirteenth member of the board. Avery Dennison is a global leader in pressure-sensitive technology and innovative self-adhesive solutions for consumer products and label materials. Based in Pasadena, Calif., the Company had 2000 sales of $3.9 billion.
