ASPs growing despite problems, IDC says
FRAMINGHAM, Massachusetts (June 4, 2001) -- Despite the challenges facing their industry, new research from IDC indicates that application service provider (ASP) revenues are growing at a compound annual rate of 89%, which should grow the market from $986 million in 2000 to nearly $24 billion by 2005.
ASPs are companies that rent access to applications over the Internet, which allows users to pay as they go rather than paying for application licenses up front. Among the obstacles being faced by the industry, however, are customer concerns about how their businesses will be affected if connectivity fails or if their ASP is sold or shuts down.
"Despite the well-publicized challenges facing the ASP market today, the ASP industry is moving beyond the days of hype and producing some real success stories," said Amy Mizoras, senior analyst for IDC's Applications and Application Service Providers research. "Our data clearly shows that ASPs are alive and kicking." IDC projects that the United States will remain the largest market for ASP services through 2005, but that Western Europe represents an emerging opportunity. ASP revenues in Europe have the potential to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 128%, to $5.7 billion by 2005. Contributing to the growth in Europe are the region's lack of skilled IT professionals and the sophistication of its service-level agreements, IDC says. "It's generally accepted that software as a service concept will become the accepted delivery model for application functionality," said Jessica Goepfert, senior analyst for IDC's ASP research program. "However, what is yet to be determined is who will be the dominant suppliers of these ASP services. This means that even the ASPs who are the current market leaders cannot afford to rest on their laurels." The full report is available for purchase from IDC by sending an e-mail to jnagle@idc.com.
